THE ACADEMIC YEAR (APPROXIMATE DATES)
27 September - 20 December: winter semester
21 December - 20 January: holiday
21 January - 14 February: exam period
15 February - 15 May: summer semester
16 May - 25 June: exam period
26 June - 31 August: holiday
1 September - 15 September: exam period
Note: In the last year (BA - 3rd year, MA - 2nd year), the summer semester is shorter: the courses end roughly on 20 April. This is reflected in the lower number of ECTS credits awarded for these courses.
COURSES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Courses in English taught at the Literary Academy fall into two groups:
a) language courses (the main textbook used is the New Headway NEW/THIRD edition series; some courses focus on the development of specific skills),
b) specialization courses (Anglo-American literature and culture, media, publishing and editing).
Erasmus students can choose any courses from the list which correspond to their level (BA or MA), and any optional courses. If space permits, BA students may also choose MA courses. When choosing a course, the language level is more important than the year. For instance, for an advanced international student, a 1st-year upper-intermediate course is more suitable than a 3rd-year intermediate one.
The parallel specialization courses are also divided according to the language level. For instance, an advanced international student should choose Introduction to British Culture A; an intermediate international student Introduction to British Culture C.
Translation courses focus on the translation from English to Czech, and they are suitable only for those international students who have a strong interest in translation.
Spanish, German, French and Russian are also taught at the Literary Academy. However, most of these language courses are not suitable for international students, since Czech is used as the language of instruction.
The following is the preliminary list of courses for the academic year 2010/2011, the numbers of ECTS credits are given in bracets. Particularly with specialization MA courses, the exact content may be modified in September 2010 depending on the numbers of students admitted.
